The Introduction

  1. When did the Lord Jesus speak this words?
    At the Last Supper, on the night before His death.
  2. What name is given here to the Holy Spirit?
    the Counselor, or Paraclete, or Advocate
  3. What does this name mean?
    One who pleads for another on the ground of justice.
  4. Who is the Holy Spirit?
    The third person in the triune God.
  5. What lesson can we learn from His name?
    That the Spirit is God and that His wish is to impart holiness.
  6. What significance is there that the Holy Spirit is also the Counselor?
    That it is the intention of God to strengthen us in the way of holiness.  

The ground on which the Spirit is sent to us

  1. Who did send the Holy Spirit?
    God, the Father.
  2. When was this promise fulfilled?
    At the day of Pentecost.
  3. In whose name is the Holy Spirit sent?
    In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  4. What does it mean that the Holy Spirit is sent in Jesus' name?
    It is on account of what the Lord Jesus has done for us that we receive the Holy Spirit.

The Mission of the Holy Spirit

  1. What is the work of the Holy Spirit?
    To teach us all things and remind us of all things the Lord Jesus has said.
  2. To whom was this promise given?
    To the apostles.
  3. Does it also apply to us?
    Yes, because the Holy Spirit would be with us for ever.
  4. What is meant by "He shall teach you all things?"
    The Holy Spirit leads God's children into all truths necessary for salvation and holiness.
  5. What special blessing resulted from this promise?
    The writing of the New Testament.
  6. What is the special name of this gift of the Holy Spirit?
    Inspiration.
  7. What do we learn from the word "Whom?"
    That the Holy Spirit is a real person.
  8. What special comfort that does this text give us?
    It tells us that the person who receives the Holy Spirit is led to know the things of God.
  9. What does this text teach us about the knowledge of God?
    It consists of whatsoever the Lord Jesus said to us.
